The ALP National Returning Officer, Tony Lang, has announced that Jenny McAllister has been elected ALP National President by a direct election of the Party's members.
The Vice Presidents elected in order are Tony Sheldon and Jane Garrett.
Under the National Constitution of the ALP, the three officers are elected for a three year term, with each serving as National President in turn.
The incoming President and Vice Presidents will take office at the beginning of the ALP National Conference on 2 December 2011.
“On behalf of the ALP I would like to congratulate Jennifer, Tony and Jane on their successful election. It is a great honour for each of them and I look forward to working with them over the next three years. I also want to thank each of the candidates who put their name forward to participate in this election and every ALP member who exercised their right to elect the National President and Vice Presidents of the Australian Labor Party”, said ALP National Secretary George Wright.
Jenny McAllister
Jenny McAllister has served as Labor’s National President since July 2011. Jenny joined the party in 1992. Her policy interests include economics, indigenous culture and policy, digital campaigning and the environment.
In 2003 Jenny co-founded the Labor Environment Activist Network which campaigns within the ALP on environmental issues, particularly climate change.
She is married and the mother of two young boys, and lives in Redfern with her family. She is currently employed as a consultant in the private sector.
Tony Sheldon
Tony Sheldon joined the Labor Party when he turned 15.
Tony is a former NSW TWU Secretary and became National Secretary in 2006. He is now leading the successful campaign to establish ‘Safe Rates’ in the trucking industry and maintaining the fight to save Qantas jobs.
Tony is married with two school-age children.
Jane Garrett
Jane was elected as the State Member for Brunswick in November 2010 and is now also deputy chair of the Law Reform Committee of the Victorian Parliament.
Jane studied law and arts and was admitted to legal practice in 2000. She worked as a senior adviser to Premier Steve Bracks for several years.
Prior to entering parliament Jane practised law in the areas of industrial relations and discrimination law at Slater & Gordon and was also elected to and Mayor of Yarra City Council.
Jane is 38 years old and was born and raised in inner city Melbourne. She is married to James and has 2 young daughters.
