Bill to transfer responsibility for consumer credit (News)

The bill is the result of the strong commitment by the commonwealth, state and territory governments working in a spirit of cooperation to build the COAG reform vision for a single, uniform national credit law.

Tomorrow the Government will introduce legislation into the parliament that will give effect to the referral of responsibility for consumer credit to the Commonwealth. 

Passage of the National Consumer Credit Protection Amendment Bill is the final step for the Commonwealth in creating a single, standard, national regime for the regulation of consumer credit.

Often when we think about our children’s education and school outcomes we focus on the formal school system. However the evidence that shows that critical learning takes place well before kids reach the school gate. 

The experiences children have in their early years are crucial and set their lifelong pathway for learning.  That’s why in my first six months as Minister for Early Childhood Education and Child Care a key focus has been the quality of child care and early learning we are providing for our kids.

The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, today welcomed the release of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma's final Social Justice Report.

In his time as Commissioner, Mr Calma has been a strong advocate of Indigenous human rights and the need to close the gap in Indigenous disadvantage.

I want to acknowledge the substantial contribution he has made in his role as Commissioner over the last five and a half years.

New building energy efficiency rules (News)

The changes to the 2010 Building Code of Australia will increase the energy efficiency of new buildings and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fulfilling a COAG commitment.

The Building Ministers' Forum, comprising Commonwealth, State and Territory Ministers responsible for buildings policy, recently agreed to the measures.
