The Rudd Government is deeply disappointed that the Opposition Leader has walked away from his party’s commitment to bipartisan targets on homelessness.

Previous Opposition Leaders Brendan Nelson and Malcolm Turnbull both pledged their full support to the Government’s homelessness agenda.

Welfare organisations have said this week that the commitment to halve homelessness should have cross-party support and that the fate of homeless Australians should not hang on an election outcome.

These are ambitious targets but they are achievable. By supporting them, Mr Abbott could make halving homelessness a bipartisan national commitment.

Minister for Housing, Tanya Plibersek today visited the refurbished Vincentian House in the inner Sydney suburb of Surry Hills, which provides accommodation and services for homeless families with children.

Ms Plibersek commended St Vincent de Paul and the staff and volunteers at Vincentian House for their commitment and dedication to help women and children through times of great need.

We're the land of the fair go, aren't we? We espouse social justice and consider ourselves to be a very egalatarian society.
 
How is it then that we can now talk about four generations of jobless families in Australia?  Why do more than 100,000 people sleep rough every night? Why has our society failed those among us living with mental illness or disability? Why do we have the second highest proportion of our population of OECD countries parked on disability pensions? Why can a postcode be a determinant of our children's future potential?

Weekly payments for vulnerable Australians (News)

As part of the Rudd Government’s response to homelessness, a new bill to be introduced to parliament today will provide vulnerable Australians with the option of receiving their income support payments weekly rather than fortnightly.
