The Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Maxine McKew told today's 6th Annual Australian Roads Summit in Brisbane that the Rudd Government's unprecedented $35.8 billion investment on road and rail infrastructure showed that it believes in government "for the long haul."

The Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Maxine McKew told today's 6th Annual Australian Roads Summit in Brisbane that the Rudd Government's unprecedented $35.8 billion investment on road and rail infrastructure showed that it believes in government "for the long haul."

"We in the Rudd Government knew that that unless we took action, unless we adopted a fresh approach - a national approach - to infrastructure maintenance and development, these reforms would probably never have happened," Ms McKew said.

Kevin Rudd, Mike Rann and I announced a joint $18 million investment to fix the dangerous intersection at Victor Harbour Road and Main Road in McLaren Vale on Saturday. This is great news to local residents and businesses, and is another example of the Federal Government’s commitment to invest in infrastructure and prepare Australia for the future.

Infrastructure spending supports Indigenous students (News)

Two boarding schools in Queensland enrolling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have received a $1.9 million boost in infrastructure funding from the Rudd Government.

Two boarding schools in Queensland enrolling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have received a $1.9 million boost in infrastructure funding from the Australian Government.

The schools are Djarragun College in Gordonvale, which will receive just over $1 million, and Shalom Christian College in Condon, which will receive $920 000.

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, congratulated the two schools and commended them for their contributions to the educational welfare and achievements of their Indigenous students.

Next time you drive past a primary school you’ll surely see how the Rudd Government’s $42 billion Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan is supporting jobs and small business and is building the long-term infrastructure for the country’s future.

With 70 per cent of the stimulus invested on road, rail, school construction and housing infrastructure, it is supporting up to 210,000 jobs.

The Rudd Government today announced the completion of the final stage of the $105 million upgrade of the rail link between Melbourne and the South Australian border today.

Lindsay Tanner, Federal Minister for Finance and Deregulation and Member for Melbourne said the project was brought forward thanks to the Australian Government’s $1.2 billion stimulus investment in December 2008.

Today’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) result shows that inflation remains low, reflecting an economy that is still operating below capacity.

Inflation was 2.1 per cent through the year to the December quarter 2009, at the lower end of the Reserve Bank’s 2 to 3 per cent target band, up from 1.3 per cent in the September quarter.  This increase was largely a result of the sharp falls in global fuel prices evident in the December quarter 2008, dropping out of today’s annual CPI.
