Federal Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, today paid tribute today to Margaret (Peg) Nelson nee (Bloomfield) who passed away this week in her 97th year.

He said Peg was one of the Territory’s gems, she lived a remarkable life and was witness to much of the Territory's transformation.

“Two years before her birth in 1913, the Commonwealth had taken over the administration of the Northern Territory with the promise of completing the Adelaide to Darwin railway.

The chance to own their own home is a step closer for Alice Springs traditional owners living at Ilpeye Ilpeye, a town camp located on the eastern boundary of Alice Springs.

 

Through the Australian Government’s acquisition of the land, the underlying tenure of Ilpeye Ilpeye has changed from community lease to freehold held by the Commonwealth.  Any underlying native title is preserved.

 

Northern Command HQ stays in Darwin (News)

The Government has considered the roles and functions of NORCOM Headquarters within the context of previous border protection reviews and has directed that NORCOM is to be retained in Darwin.

Defence Minister, Senator John Faulkner, today announced that the Australian Defence Force's Northern Command (NORCOM) Headquarters would remain in Darwin.

Senator Faulkner made the announcement at the opening of the Pacific 2010 International Maritime Congress in Sydney.

The opening of the $27.8 million Darwin Radiation Oncology facility, to be known as the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre, means cancer patients in the Northern Territory will no longer have to travel to Adelaide to undertake their radiation treatment.

Commonwealth support is being provided to the Northern Territory Government through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

A Commonwealth environment grant will help preserve eroding beaches at Yirrakala near Nhulunbuy.

Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon said Yirrkala Dhanbul Aboriginal Corporation had won $19,000 funding through the 2009-10 Caring for our Country Community Action Grants program.

Mr Snowdon said it would enable the group to protect rapidly eroding beaches in the Yirrkala area, beginning with Yirrkala itself.

The grant is one of five Community Action Grants awarded to the Northern Territory in 2009-10, worth a total of $98,347.
