A welcome by ALP National Secretary, Karl Bitar

Labor's 45th National Conference in late July will be the first gathering of the party at a national level since the election of the Rudd Labor Government.

This Conference will be critical in shaping Labor's future policy agenda.

Since the last election, the Rudd Government has been tackling the challenges we face as a nation in areas like climate change, education, health, and national security. The neglect of the previous government is being addressed with massive investment in skills, infrastructure and industries of the future like renewable energy and IT.

The Government is also responding to the immediate challenge of the Global Financial Crisis which is continuing to affect all economies across the world, including our own.

The National Conference will contribute to this agenda and set Labor's National Platform for the next three years.

Labor's National Conference is our largest gathering of delegates, parliamentarians and party members. This year the National Conference will again feature a large 'Fringe' program of events, with forums, discussions and briefings designed to add more to party membership and continue Labor's engagement with the community.

In total, the Conference will be attended by 400 delegates, state and territory leaders and the many hundreds of observers who come along to observe proceedings and participate in the Fringe.

The Conference will again be at the Sydney Convention Centre at Darling Harbour, from 30 July 2009 through to 1 August 2009. I look forward to seeing you at the Conference.
