Establishing a single national school curriculum
Federal Labor is building a world class education system through the delivery of Australia’s first ever National Curriculum.
Successive governments have talked about the need for a National Curriculum for over 30 years. With the strong support of States and Territories Julia Gillard as Education Minister has achieved it.
The Curriculum is world class. It is one of the first in the world to be delivered online making it dynamic and easily updated, unlike the static, hard-copy form which currently exists in each State and Territory.
The online delivery of the National Curriculum leads the world, giving schools and teachers the opportunity to integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education to enhance learning experiences and improve student engagement.
Australian parents can be confident their child will be taught from a world class curriculum regardless of the school they attend or their location.
The 80,000 families who move interstate each year can be assured their child’s education will not be disrupted. They will be able to move schools without the disadvantages of having to learn a new curriculum and will benefit from a nationally consistent education system.
The new English, maths, science and history curriculum was the subject of extensive consultation this year and is currently being road tested in schools around Australia. The next phase of work has commenced to develop the National Curriculum for languages, geography and the arts.
