About Joe

Joe Ludwig was born in Longreach and has worked in Cairns, Ipswich and Brisbane.

After a career as an Industrial Inspector and a Training Coordinator, Senator Ludwig was employed as a Senior Industrial Advocate for the Queensland Branch of The Australian Workers' Union and is a barrister. Senator Ludwig also served as an Officer in the Australian Army Reserve.

An ALP member since 1978, Joe was elected to the Senate in 1998. Following the 2004 election, Joe was appointed to the Shadow Ministry as Shadow Minister for Justice&Customs, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs after serving as a Parliamentary Secretary and Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate over the previous term. Joe was appointed Shadow Attorney-General on 9 March 2007.

Joe was appointed Minister for Human Services and Manager of Government Business in the Senate upon the election of the Labor Government in 2007. In 2009, he was appointed Special Minister of State and Cabinet Secretary while continuing as Manager of Government Business in the Senate.

Joe is married and lives in Brisbane with his wife and two daughters.

Joe Ludwig is the Duty Senator for the electorates of Fadden, Groom, McPherson and Moncrieff.

Name Derivation:

Named after Sir Arthur Fadden (1895-1973), Prime Minister of Australia August-October 1941.

Area and Location Description:

Fadden covers approximately 395 sq km bounded by the Logan and Albert Rivers in the north, the Pacific Motorway to Coomera and suburbs from Oxenford to Gaven in the west, Molendinar and Labrador in the south, and the Pacific shore from the Gold Coast Seaway to Jumpinpin Inlet in the east. Suburbs and towns include Alberton, Arundel, Biggera Waters, Coombabah, Coomera, Gaven, Gilberton, Helensvale, Hollywell, Hope Island, Jacobs Well, Labrador, Molendinar, Norwell, Paradise Point, Parkwood, Runaway Bay, Stapylton, Steiglitz, Woongoolba and parts of Ormeau, Oxenford, Pacific Pines, Pimpama and Southport. South Stradbroke Island and other islands in the Broadwater and South Moreton Bay are within the Division.

Products/Industries of the Area:

Residential areas are concentrated in the south with semi-rural in the north. Commercial activities include tourism, market gardens, sugar cane farming, and light industry including boat building.

Name Derivation:

Named after Sir Littleton Groom (1867-1936), Member of the House of Representatives 1901-29, 1931-36. Speaker of the House of Representatives 1926-29.

Area and Location Description:

Groom covers an area of 5,594 sq kms and is located on the Darling Downs region of south east Queensland. The major population centre is Toowoomba which is Australia's largest inland town. Other towns in the division include Oakey and Pittsworth.

Products/Industries of the Area:

This area is noted for its rich and diverse range of products and industries including agriculture, retailing and food processing as well as for the provision of educational and community services. Toowoomba is known as the Garden City. The University of Southern Queensland is located in Toowoomba while the Army Aviation Centre is based at Oakey.

McPherson

Name Derivation:

Named after the McPherson Range which forms the south western boundary of the division.

Area and Location Description:

McPherson covers an area of approximately 230 sq km from the New South Wales border in the south to Clear Island Waters and Merrimac in the north, and west to Mudgeeraba and Tallebudgera Valley. It takes in the major part of the Gold Coast tourist strip north from the New South Wales border through Coolangatta, Tugun, Currumbin, Elanora, Palm Beach, Burleigh Heads, Robina, Varsity Lakes to Merrimac and Clear Island Waters in the north. It also includes the hinterland areas of Mudgeeraba, Currumbin Valley and Tallebudgera Valley.

Tourism and associated industries and a variety of small industries.
