Varenya has been a member of the Labor Party since 1999, and has a long history of advocating workers rights and equality for all.
Prior to being appointed NT Branch Secretary, Varenya was a member of the NT ALP Administrative Committee and Executive. He has held the positions of Vice President, Assistant Secretary, Electoral College member, Campaign Committee member and an ALP National Conference delegate.
Varenya is a Senior Relationship Manager with REST Industry Super, where he has developed communication tools and strategies for engaging the community, particularly young workers. Varenya also developed an Indigenous program, which featured in the media nationally.
Preceding his position at REST, he was a Senior Organiser for the SDA for 10 years. During this time he negotiated pay increases, terms of employment, recruited new members and provided industrial advice. One of his main priorities was engaging young workers in the union. Varenya was also the Secretary of UnionsNT.
In addition, he is a committee member of the Palmerston Regional Business Association, Chairman of the Association of Superfunds of Australia NT, Deputy Chairman of the Service Industry Training Advisory Council, and a Board Member of the Northern Territory Industry Training Bureau.
He studied at Harvard Business School, holds a Diploma in Financial Services and has a Bachelor of Science from Charles Darwin University.
Varenya resides in Darwin with his wife, and two beautiful daughters.
