The Gillard Labor Government has pledged to partner with the City of Canning to construct a new Multipurpose Community Centre north of the Canning River.
Labor Candidate for Swan, Tim Hammond, welcomed the announcement made today by Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese.
The new Multipurpose Community Centre in Cannington is expected to include a 25 metre heated indoor pool, a teaching/exercise/leisure pool, a toddlers’ pool, water slide and outdoor water playground.
It will also include a new library, community meeting rooms, two multipurpose indoor courts, gym and cardio fitness facility, cafe and crèche/children’s playing area.
“All up, this is a $34 million project and it will deliver a significant boost to the Canning economy as well as delivering modern, first rate facilities for the community,” Anthony Albanese said.
“The Multipurpose Community Centre is part of Federal Labor’s plans to build stronger, healthier communities and we are partnering with the City of Canning to deliver this on the ground.”
“This multi-million dollar project will be a fantastic investment in vital infrastructure for the local community and for Perth as a whole,” Tim Hammond said.
“And it will support local jobs during the construction phase and into the long term.”
“The $7 million contribution will build on Federal Labor’s record investment in local infrastructure, such as the Great Eastern Highway upgrade, the new civic centre and library in South Perth and the Belmont sport and recreation centre upgrade,” Anthony Albanese concluded.
Funding for this contribution will be fully offset over the forward estimates, consistent with the Government’s commitment to return the budget to surplus in three years.
