Abbott continues his climate con job

Penny Wong posted Tuesday, 2 February 2010

In his first Question Time as Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott has continued his misleading and dishonest scare campaign on climate change.

Tony Abbott said in the House of Representatives today that the Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme “will increase Australian families’ bills by $1100 a year’’.

As the Government has made clear on more than 10 occasions now, this figure is just plain wrong.

Tony Abbott himself admitted in December that his $1100 figure was based on nothing more than a Google news search.

The figure of $1100 is almost double the actual impact and completely ignores the comprehensive cash assistance the Government will provide to 9 out of 10 Australian households.

Treasury modelling found the Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme would cause prices to rise by 1.1 per cent in 2013 – on average costing a household $624 a year.

And under the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, more than 90 per cent of all households will receive assistance. On average these households will receive around $660 of assistance in 2013.

Tony Abbott has shown his climate change policy is nothing more than a climate con job.

The continued use of this figure shows Mr Abbott is dishonest and is only interested in running a misleading scare campaign. He cannot be trusted on climate change.
