Abbott continues to mislead on climate change

As he heads into his first parliamentary sitting week, Tony Abbott has continued his misleading and dishonest scare campaign on climate change.

Tony Abbott has told Australians today that the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme “will slug families an extra $1100 per year’’.

This figure is just plain wrong – it is almost double the actual impact and completely ignores the comprehensive cash assistance the Government will provide to 9 out of 10 Australian households.

Treasury modelling found the Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme would cause prices to rise by 1.1 per cent in 2013 – on average costing a household $624 a year.

And under the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, a total of 90 per cent of all households will receive assistance and on average these households will receive around $660 of assistance in 2013.

It is clear that Tony Abbott is now making misleading statements which he knows are wrong.

This shows he cannot be trusted when it comes to action on climate change.

Mr Abbott has indicated he will provide a detailed and fully costed climate change policy by the time Parliament resumes on Tuesday. This policy must be capable of delivering on the full target range he has endorsed.

Yesterday, in a speech in Adelaide, Mr Abbott argued a four degree rise in temperature would not be catastrophic.

This is irresponsible, as we already know that a four degree rise in temperature would be both an environmental and economic disaster for Australia.

This is why leaders of the world’s major emitters all agreed in the Copenhagen Accord to limit temperature rise to less than two degrees.

Mr Abbott must accept climate change is real – and stop misleading the Australian people.
