Special Minister of State Gary Gray has welcomed the release of the Australian National Audit Office’s first performance audit of the Government’s framework for campaign advertising.
The Administration of Government Advertising Arrangements audit report, tabled in Parliament today, suggests that the Government’s transparency and accountability framework for campaign advertising is operating well.
“We welcome this report and hope it plays an important role in improving the departmental processes and administration of advertising under the Government’s advertising framework,” Mr Gray said.
“The recommendations of this report build on the significant reforms to campaign advertising introduced by the government in June 2008, which were independently reviewed and refined in 2010.
“These reforms require campaigns to be independently reviewed, properly targeted and non-political, with the intent of informing the community about important government policies and programs.
“This audit report by the ANAO has found that all of the factual statements in the assessed campaigns, including the Government’s Clean Energy Future advertising campaign, were able to be supported by evidence and complied with all relevant guidelines.”
The ANAO Report suggests that the five audited agencies generally adopted reasonable practices in terms of campaign development and demonstrated compliance with the Government’s campaign advertising guidelines.
