The Minister for Families, Jenny Macklin, today welcomed the start of National Child Protection Week, which runs from 5 to 11 September.
National Child Protection Week is an annual campaign that aims to raise community awareness about child abuse and neglect, with a strong focus on prevention.
This years theme – ‘when we know 33,000 children are abused each year, it’s everyone’s business’ – encourages all Australians to think about how they can help prevent child abuse and neglect in the community.
The Federal Labor Government has provided $300,000 to the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect to help fund events and activities during National Child Protection Week.
The Federal Labor Government is also supporting White Balloon Day, held on 7 September as part of Child Protection Week, with more than $130,000 in funding for Bravehearts.
White Balloon Day is a day of recognition, awareness and support for the victims of child sexual assault and their families.
It is also a key fundraising initiative for Bravehearts so they can continue to educate, empower and protect Australian children from sexual assault.
Federal Labor’s support for national Child Protection Week and White Balloon Day is provided under the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children.
Delivered by the Federal Labor Government, in partnership with state and territory governments and non-government organisations, the National Framework is an ambitious, long-term approach to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Australian children.
Every child has the right to a safe, healthy and happy childhood.
I encourage all Australians to get involved in this important week by attending an event, making a donation or buying a White Balloon. To find out more visit the following websites:
