A re-elected Gillard Labor Government will invest to improve the health of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges environment.

The $6.6 million investment was announced today by the Environment Protection Minister, Peter Garrett, and Labor Candidate for Boothby, Annabel Digance.

“The bushland of the Adelaide Hills gives our city its distinctive character.  I’m very pleased that Federal Labor is providing funds to keep our natural bushland in good condition,” said Annabel Digance.

“This funding boost will support work including weed removal and revegetation by the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resource Management (NRM) Board and the protection of critical habitat and threatened species.”

“Here on the edge of Adelaide, this region is the most biologically diverse in all of South Australia.”

“It is home to unique plant and animal species like the endangered Southern Brown Bandicoot, the endangered White Beauty Spider Orchid, Grey Box Grassy Woodlands, Iron-grass Natural Temperate Grassland and Peppermint Box Grassy Woodland.”

"This investment by the Gillard Labor Government will also support the Adelaide Hills and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board in the development of a grants program for local landholders for revegetation, fencing of remnant vegetation and weed control activities.

“Working collaboratively with landholders and farmers is a priority for the Gillard Labor Government under our $2 billion Caring for our Country program,” said Peter Garrett.

“This program recognises the real environmental benefits that can be achieved by bringing the government, environmental and community groups and farmers together to deliver region-wide outcomes.”

This $6.6 million investment over three years is already included in the budget in the Caring for our Country program’s 2010-11 regional base-level allocation.

Caring for our Country is jointly administered by Minister Garrett and the Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Tony Burke.
