    GP Super Clinic for Adelaide

The Gillard Labor Government will deliver a new GP Super Clinic for inner Adelaide, relieving pressure on the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis, and Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Member for Port Adelaide, Mark Butler, announced the new clinic in Adelaide today.

The Gillard Labor Government will make up to $15 million available for the Inner Adelaide GP Super Clinic, improving access to coordinated health care services in Adelaide.

Inner Adelaide has been identified as an area of growth, with high levels of chronic disease and a high elderly population, which will benefit from the establishment of a GP Super Clinic.

GP Super Clinics are a key part of the Gillard Labor Government’s plan to improve GP and other primary care services around the country, offering after-hours services and improving access to coordinated health care services for the local community.

They also provide a quality setting to help train some of the 3,000 nurses and 1,300 GPs who will come on-line as a result of Federal Labor’s investments to address Mr Abbott’s health workforce shortages.

Kate Ellis said: “Adelaide residents are crying out for better health services and improved access to GPs.

“I am thrilled that a re-elected Gillard Labor Government will be delivering for our local community and building a GP Super Clinic in my electorate.

Mark Butler said: “A GP Super Clinic in inner Adelaide will mean more services are available where people need them.

“Tony Abbott and the Coalition have committed to scrapping funding for GP Super Clinics, which means people in Adelaide will miss out on the services this clinic will provide.

“As Health Minister in the previous Coalition Government, Tony Abbott ripped $1 billion out of our public hospitals – his latest health announcements are not only meagre, they contain a massive $500 million hole.

“Tony Abbott doesn’t understand economic policy, just like he doesn’t understand the importance of vital health funding for people in Adelaide. Tony Abbott’s lack of economic judgement means he’s not up to becoming the Prime Minister of Australia.”

Funding for the inner Adelaide GP Super Clinic is already included in the Budget, through funding for additional GP Super Clinics provided for in the 2010‑11 Budget.

A competitive tender process will be conducted by the Department of Health and Ageing to determine the successful operator of the new Adelaide GP Super Clinic.
