Improving safety in Australia schools

The Federal Government will spend $15 million to make more Australian schools safer places for children to learn.
The Secure Schools Program provides schools with capital funding to make physical safety improvements.
This is a targeted program aimed at schools at risk of racial, religious or ethnically motivated violence, property crime or harassment.
Safety infrastructure which could be funded includes safety fencing, closed-circuit television and improved lighting.
“Students learn better if they feel safe,” Mr Clare said.
“Parents have a right to expect their children will be safe at school.
“That’s why the Federal Government is investing in this program.”
This is the second round of funding under the program which has provided almost $20 million in funding for 69 projects in 54 schools around the country.
Mr Clare has written to State and Territory Governments asking them to help identify which schools should be provided with funding.
Schools nominated by State and Territory Governments will be invited to submit an application for their proposed Secure Schools project. Applications will be open for a six week period, with successful projects selected in the second quarter of 2012.
