    National disability strategy

The Gillard Labor Government has released its draft National Disability Strategy which outlines a 10-year national plan to improve the lives of people with disability, promote participation, and create a more inclusive society.

The Gillard Labor Government is committed to ensuring that people with disability are able to fulfil their potential.

The Strategy has been developed in consultation with people with disability, the community, State and Territory Governments and local governments.

It outlines a nationwide approach to improving the lives of people with disability.

The Strategy will guide public policy across governments and aims to bring about change in all mainstream services and programs as well as community infrastructure.

This change is important to ensuring that people with disability have the same opportunities as other Australians – a quality education, health care, a job where possible and access to buildings, transport and social activities.

The Gillard Labor Government has already delivered historic increases to the Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment, and record funding for disability services through the National Disability Agreement.

Federal Labor also ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

But the Gillard Labor Government understands that more needs to be done.

As part of the Strategy, the Gillard Labor Government has asked the Productivity Commission to investigate new approaches to providing long-term care and support for people with disability.

A re-elected Gillard Labor Government will take the National Disability Strategy to the Council of Australian Governments early next term.

The Gillard Labor Government’s National Disability Strategy is fully provided for in the Budget.  Costs have been met from within the Departments of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs and Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government.
