Net safety: think before you post

Stephen Conroy posted Tuesday, 9 February 2010

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy today used international Safer Internet Day to remind people of steps to take to stay safer on the internet.

“Each February, nations around the world mark Safer Internet Day to raise awareness about using online technology and mobile phones safely and responsibly,” said Senator Conroy.

“The theme for this year is: think before you post.

“Simply stopping to think about the consequences of sending a particular message, or posting something online, may help to reduce negative experiences.

“It is important to remember that once something is posted, it can be online forever.”

In conjunction with Safer Internet Day, Senator Conroy released a new report from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) on cyber-safety.

Senator Conroy said Online risk and safety in the digital economy was the third report in a series on developments in internet filtering technologies and other safety initiatives.

“The report identifies education, research, consultation and technological tools as essential parts of the global effort to reduce cyber-safety risk,” Senator Conroy said.

“It also highlights that we all have a role to play in managing online risk, including governments and regulators, operators of online services and users themselves.”

The Australian Government is working to ensure every day is a safer internet day through implementing its $125.8 million Cyber-safety Plan.
