Gary arrived on Australia’s shores with his family at age eight, a ten pound Pom. His family settled in public housing in Whyalla, South Australia, where his father worked at the local steel mill.
He studied Economics at the Australian National University and Education at the University of Western Australia. He has a continuing interest in education and in the rights of Indigenous Australians.
Gary has an extensive career in the Labor Party, most notably as the party's National Secretary.
Before entering parliament in 2007, Gary worked for Woodside Energy to make sure the company remained Australian-owned.
In 2003 Gary was awarded the Officer in the Order of Australia for his contribution to Australia’s democracy.
Gary is married to Deborah and has three children. He is a fan of the West Coast Eagles in the AFL.
