Biography

Joe Ludwig was born in Longreach and has worked in Cairns, Ipswich and Brisbane.

After a career as an Industrial Inspector and a Training Coordinator, Senator Ludwig was employed as a Senior Industrial Advocate for the Queensland Branch of The Australian Workers' Union and is a barrister. Senator Ludwig also served as an Officer in the Australian Army Reserve.

An ALP member since 1978, Joe was elected to the Senate in 1998. Following the 2004 election, Joe was appointed to the Shadow Ministry as Shadow Minister for Justice&Customs, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs after serving as a Parliamentary Secretary and Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate over the previous term. Joe was appointed Shadow Attorney-General on 9 March 2007.

Joe was appointed Minister for Human Services and Manager of Government Business in the Senate upon the election of the Rudd Labor Government in 2007. In 2009, he was appointed Special Minister of State and Cabinet Secretary while continuing as Manager of Government Business in the Senate.

Joe is married and lives in Brisbane with his wife and two daughters.

Name Derivation: Named after Sir Littleton Groom 1867-1936, Member of the House of Representatives 1901-29, 1931-36. Speaker of the House of Representatives 1926-29.

Area and Location Description: Groom covers an area of 5 585 sq km and is located in the Darling Downs region of southeast Queensland. The major population centre is Toowoomba, which is Australia's largest inland town. Other towns include Cambooya, Goombungee, Greenmount, Highfields, Jondaryan, Oakey, Pittsworth and Wyreema.

Name Derivation: Named after the McPherson Range which forms the south western boundary of the division.

Area and Location Description: McPherson covers an area of approximately 357 sq km from the New South Wales border in the south to Clear Island Waters and Merrimac in the north, and west to Mudgeeraba and Springbrook. It takes in the major part of the tourist strip of the Gold Coast from the New South Wales border through Coolangatta, Tugun, Currumbin, Elanora, Palm Beach, Burleigh Heads, Robina, Varsity Lakes, Merrimac and Clear Island Waters in the north. It also includes the hinterland areas of Mudgeeraba, Currumbin Valley, Tallebudgera Valley and Springbrook.
