Biography

Stephen was appointed as a senator for Victoria in 1996. He was an industrial officer/superannuation officer for the Transport Workers Union Victorian Branch from 1992 to 1996.

Stephen was a ministerial adviser to the State Minister for Industry from 1990 to 1992 and an assistant adviser to the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1988 to 1990.

From 1986 to 1987, he was an electorate officer for the Federal Member for Canberra, consultant to the Minister for Science and Minister assisting the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce and electorate officer for the Minister for Home Affairs.

Stephen worked for the Metal Trades Industry Association from 1984 to 1986.

Name: Named after Matthew Flinders (1774-1814), well-known navigator and explorer. He was the first to circumnavigate Australia. The adoption of the name 'Australia' is due to him.

Area and Location Description: It covers an area of approximately 1955 sq km from Portsea in the south west to Mt Martha, Baxter, Cranbourne South, Kooweerup and Lang Lang along the northern sector to San Remo and Dalyston in the south east. The division surrounds and encompasses Western Port Bay including French Island and Phillip Island. Name Derivation: Named after an Aboriginal name for the Murray River.

Area and Location Description: Indi covers an area of approximately 28 008 sq km along the New South Wales border from Rutherglen to Corryong in the north, Avenel and Woods Point in the south and the snowfields of Falls Creek, Mount Hotham, Mount Buffalo and Mount Buller in the east. Name Derivation: Named after the area in which it is located. Mallee is an Aboriginal word for dwarf eucalypts which grow in the area.

Area and Location Description: Mallee covers an area of approximately 70 694 sq km in the north west corner of Victoria. It is bordered by the Murray River in the north, the South Australian border in the west, the division of Wannon in the south, and the divisions of Bendigo and Murray in the east. Name Derivation: Named after the Murray River which was named by Charles Sturt in 1830 after Sir George Murray, Colonial Secretary.

Area and Location Description: Murray covers an area of approximately 16 229 sq km. Its boundaries extend from Boort situated in the north west corner of the Loddon Shire bordering the division of Mallee, south to Wedderburn and Inglewood, bordering the division of Bendigo, extending east taking in the local government areas of Campaspe and City of Greater Shepparton, bordering the division of Indi. It extends north east to Yarrawonga joining the State border. The main towns include Boort, Bridgewater on Loddon, Cobram, Echuca, Kyabram, Mooroopna, Murchison, Nathalia, Numurkah, Rochester, Rushworth, Shepparton, Tatura, Wedderburn and Yarrawonga.
