Member for La Trobe
Laura Smyth is the Federal Member for La Trobe, elected to the Federal Parliament in August 2010.
Before becoming a Member of Parliament, Laura was a commercial lawyer. Laura holds a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Laws with Honours and a Masters in Law. During her years as a lawyer, she worked with businesses and institutions chiefly in the retail and health sectors. She also acted for community organisations and individuals in need of legal assistance on a pro bono basis.
She is currently a member of the Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit, the House Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs and the Joint Corporations and Financial Services Committee.
In 2011, she was Deputy Chair of the ALP’s National Platform Committee and is presently secretary of Labor’s Social Policy Caucus Committee.
At every opportunity, Laura encourages young people in the community to get involved in our political processes and she regularly visits schools across La Trobe to talk to students and hear their ideas. She established the La Trobe Future Leaders Forum and the annual La Trobe Leadership and Community Service Award for primary and secondary students.
Laura is proud to serve the community of La Trobe as its representative in the Federal Parliament.
