Member for Port Adelaide

National President of the Australian Labor Party
Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy

Before he was elected to parliament in 2007, Mark played a significant role in South Australia working for the interests of some of the most disadvantaged people in our community as an official with United Voice for over 15 years.

Mark has long been a champion for society’s most vulnerable, and was a member of the South Australian Social Inclusion Board during its major review of the South Australian mental health system.

This was continued in his work when he was the minister responsible for social inclusion, ageing, housing, homelessness and as Australia's first minister for mental health.

He was appointed Minister for Climate Change and Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Water in July 2013 and as the Shadow Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water in September 2013.

Mark served as President of the South Australian Branch of the ALP in 1997 to 1998 and as a member of the National Executive from 2000 to 2014. He was elected as National President in 2015.

Mark lives in Woodville Park with his wife and two children. He holds a First Class Honours Law degree, an Arts degree and a Masters degree in International Relations. In 2002 he was awarded a Centenary Medal for services to trade unionism, and he’s a strong supporter of his local AFL team, Port Adelaide Power.
