Howard Government Maritime Security Stops At The Wharf

Media Statement - 15th June 2006

The security crisis aboard the Flag of Convenience (FOC) vessel "Pos Auckland" illustrates the danger of the Howard Government's lax approach to maritime security.

An unstable situation aboard the vessel – carrying more than 30,000 tonnes of fertiliser – has reportedly resulted in threats to the safety and security of the crew.

Federal Labor understands this FOC vessel is operating under a Single Voyage Permit issued by the Howard Government.

As is the case with other FOC vessels issued permits by the Howard Government, the crew of the "Pos Auckland" is subject to none of the security checks imposed on Australian seafarers.

Despite warnings from Federal Labor, the Howard Government has failed to act on the security threat represented by FOC vessels trading on the Australian coastline carrying fertiliser and other explosives precursors.

Under the Howard Government, maritime security stops at the wharf.

If claims a "Pos Auckland" crew member has threatened to "blow the ship up" are accurate, this threat is now a reality for the people of Geelong where the vessel is moored.

Transport Minister Warren Truss must initiate an investigation into the situation aboard the "Pos Auckland" and ensure it does not set sail for Portland and Bell Bay until the safety and security of the vessel is assured.

Federal Labor renews its call for the Howard Government to protect Australia's national interest by adopting Labor's plan to rein in the indiscriminate issue of Single and Continuous Voyage Permits to FOC vessels.
