Speech - 15th September 2007

Thank you for that welcome. It’s great to be here in Penrith with you today with so many friends, colleagues and families for this important event – the launch of Kevin Rudd’s vision for new leadership. A new vision for Australia’s future.

Can I acknowledge that we have with us today many of my Shadow Ministerial colleagues and Parliamentary colleagues.

We have with us Therese Rein. We have with us ALP Candidates and we have with us supporters and friends. Thank you for joining us.

It’s my pleasure to welcome you here and in doing so, I would like to acknowledge that we are meeting on the traditional lands of the Darug People.

We will hear from Kevin very soon. And you’re all invited to join Kevin for morning tea after the formal proceedings have finished.

It’s also terrific to have so many of our hardworking Candidates here today – Candidates who are working hard in their communities for the upcoming election.

One of the key things about Australian Labor, under Kevin Rudd, is the strength and quality of our Candidates. People like Bob Debus, David Bradbury, Maxine McKew and George Newhouse, who bring experience and energy to the Australian Labor Party.

We’re also honoured to have candidates who have spent time in the service of our country in the Australian Defence Force, including Mike Kelly, Rodney Cocks, and Peter Tinley, who are here with us today.

Peter Tinley has come from Western Australia to be here today, where he is standing in the seat of Stirling.

He’s here to share with you why he is part of Kevin’s team, why he wants to see new leadership for our country.

Peter has been decorated for his leadership in war.

Peter’s served 17 of his 25 years with the SAS. He was Deputy Commander of the 550-strong Australian Joint Special Forces Group in Iraq. Part of his command was 1SAS Squadron, which was awarded a US Meritorious Unit Citation for sustained gallantry.

In 2003, Peter was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his exceptional service, dynamic leadership and consistent professional excellence.

Peter brings enormous experience and commitment to the Australian Labor team, and it’s my pleasure to introduce him to you today.

Ladies and gentlemen, Peter Tinley.
