Media Statement - 18th October 2007
The Shadow Minister for Trade and Regional Development, Simon Crean, announced today that a Rudd Labor Government will provide $200,000 to the Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club for major extensions to its Hawley facilities.
The Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club is an important piece of infrastructure in one of Tasmania’s fastest growing communities.
Port Sorell’s population swells to over 10,000 during summer months and the club plays a key role in keeping beaches safe.
Federal Labor’s commitment will enable the club to commence a first floor extension to cater for the future needs of the community.
Federal Labor Candidate for Braddon Sid Sidebottom said the Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club was deserving of Federal Government support.
For many years the club battled to find a site for its operations and establish the resources to construct a facility.
The club committee has worked tirelessly to restore services to Point Sorell in 2000 after services ceased in the 1980s.
The extension will also enable a wide range of community groups and sporting organisations to use the facility.
Simon Crean said Sid Sidebottom had championed the project in Canberra to secure resources.
Federal Labor is committed to supporting solutions developed by local communities to meet the challenges of population growth through its Better Regions program.
