Federal Labor To Provide $1 Million Boost For Kempsey Hospital

Media Statement - 21st November 2007

A Rudd Labor Government would provide up to $1 million to the Kempsey District Hospital to support the purchase of a CT scanner and portable ultrasound machine.

CT (Computerised Axial Tomography) scanners are important diagnostic tools. They are particularly useful in diagnosing head, chest and cardiac conditions.

The Kempsey District Hospital currently does not have its own CT scanner. Patients at the hospital requiring a CT scan are required either to access the service from a private provider, or travel 55 kilometres away to Port Macquarie.

Federal Labor’s commitment will mean the Kempsey District Hospital will have its own CT scanner – patients will no longer need to go offsite if they need this service.

Federal Labor’s commitment to Kempsey District Hospital will also support the purchase of a portable ultrasound machine. This machine will be available for use in the Hospital’s emergency department and obstetrics unit. This will make it much easier for the hospital’s doctors and nurses whose patients need an ultrasound.

Chris Bowen and Nicola Roxon said:

Paul Sekfy has done a first class job in lobbying to secure this funding for Kempsey Hospital. Paul made a very good case and he wasn’t afraid to put that to us. That’s what you want in a local member – someone who’s not afraid to step on a few toes to ensure that families of Kempsey get what they deserve.

Paul Sekfy said:

I’m thrilled to have secured this commitment for Kempsey Hospital, and proud to be part of a Labor team which recognises the needs of this community.

This commitment forms part of Federal Labor’s $2.5 billion plan to improve health and hospital services around the country.
