Media Statement - 2nd November 2007

A Rudd Labor Government will invest up to $7 million towards the Teaching, Training and Research Facility at Sunshine Hospital – transforming it into a major teaching hospital for Melbourne’s western suburbs.

The Sunshine Hospital Teaching, Training and Research Facility will be an innovative new training and research centre for doctors, nurses and other health professionals in Melbourne’s west.

The new facility will provide facilities for the delivery of a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses – and will help attract students and graduates to work and study at the Hospital.

The facilities at the Centre will:

· provide a high fidelity simulation laboratory – to conduct both clinical and surgical skills training;

· support high quality clinical research – which is crucial to advances in patient care; and

· include lecture and teaching space.

The new Centre will be a partnership between Western Health, Victoria University and the University of Melbourne.

The Victorian Government has already committed $15 million to the project, and each of the universities $8 million. Federal Labor’s $7 million investment will allow the $38 million project to be completed.

Federal Labor’s investment in the Teaching, Training and Research centre will help transform Sunshine Hospital into a major teaching hospital for Melbourne’s western suburbs.

This will help tackle the health workforce challenges of western Melbourne – a historically disadvantaged area with a booming population.

This investment forms part of Federal Labor’s $2.5 billion National Health and Hospitals Reform Plan.

Federal Labor has a health plan for the future. Mr Howard only has a health plan for the next election.
