Media Statement - 10th November 2007

Reports today confirm that Work Choices is bad for working families and a bureaucratic nightmare for Australian businesses.

Today is the second anniversary since Mr Howard’s and Mr Costello’s extreme workplace laws passed through the House of Representatives.

After two years Mr Howard can no longer hide his laws from policy scrutiny – he must release his Government’s own economic analysis of Work Choices.

There is now definitive evidence that Mr Howard and Mr Costello’s extreme Work Choices laws are:

  • Bad for millions of Australian employees because they allow wages and working conditions to be cut and allow workers to be sacked unfairly.
  • A bureaucratic nightmare for business, who are burdened by the complexity and slowness of the Work Choices system.

At the last election Mr Howard never, not once, told voters that he would introduce Work Choices.

After winning the election Mr Howard introduced the most extreme workplace laws the country has ever seen. Mr Howard says if he wins this election he will hand the Prime Ministership over to Peter Costello – without Peter Costello ever facing the people.

Everybody knows Peter Costello will take Work Choices even further.

A Rudd Labor Government will ensure that the second anniversary of Work Choices is the last anniversary of Work Choices.
