Media Statement - 3rd November 2007
A Rudd Labor Government will work with the Darwin and Palmerston communities and other areas to install closed circuit television (CCTV),
street lighting in lanes and upgrades for school security measures to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and gang activity.
Federal Labor will assist local residents and businesses under the $2.25 million Safer Suburbs Plan.
This is about tackling local crime problems through local solutions.
In recent months, local residents and businesses have raised concerns about incidents of petty theft, vandalism and assaults in their community.
It is time to work together to drive down crime in places like Palmerston, Parap, Casuarina, Wanguri, Malak and Karama.
In June, the Howard Government rejected an application by Darwin City Council to fund CCTV to cut anti-social behaviour and increase public confidence and personal safety.
It is time for the Federal Government to work with local communities to solve local problems and create a safer and more secure future for the people of Darwin and Palmerston.
