Biography

Bob McMullan was born in Perth on 10 December 1947 and attended Guildford Primary School and Stirling Senior High School.

He graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and a Bachelor of Economics in Industrial Relations. Whilst at university, Bob worked at a variety of jobs to support himself, including tutoring and practising as a freelance industrial advocate.

From 1975 to 1981, Bob was State Secretary of the Western Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party and was elected National Secretary in August 1981.

Following his move to Canberra, Bob obtained a Graduate Diploma in Public Law at the Australian National University.

In February 1988, Bob was sworn in as Senator for the Australian Capital Territory. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer in 1990 and Manager of Government Business in the Senate in 1991.

In March 1993, Bob was sworn in as Minister for the Arts and Administrative Services and became a member of Cabinet. In January 1994, he was appointed Minister for Trade.

Bob successfully moved from the Senate to the House of Representatives in the Federal Election in March 1996 representing the Federal Electorate of Canberra. He was appointed the Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations, Finance and Arts.

Following a redistribution of seats in the ACT, Bob was elected as Member for Fraser in October 1998 and was appointed Shadow Minister for Industry and Technology and Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives. In September 2000 Bob was appointed the Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Reconciliation and the Arts and continued as the Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives. Following the Federal election in November 2001, Bob was appointed Shadow Treasurer.

Since the election of the Rudd Labor Government in 2007, Bob is now the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs.

Bob is married to Robin and they have two daughters and three grandchildren. He is an avid follower of most sports and has a particular interest in Australian art and heritage, the environment, reading and golf. Bob is patron of several sports and arts organisations in the Australian Capital Territory.

Name: Named after James Reay Fraser (1908-1970), Member of the house of Representatives for the Australian Capital Territory (1951-1970).

Area and Location Description: It covers an area of approximately 535 sq km from the whole of Belconnen, Gungahlin, Hall, North Canberra, Majura, Kowen, the South Canberra suburbs of Barton, Kingston, Griffith, Narrabundah, Fyshwick and the Jervis Bay Territory.

Products/Industries of the area: Mainly residential with some agriculture and small industry.
