Biography

Mark Arbib was elected NSW Senator at the 2007 Federal Election. His term commenced on 1 July 2008.

Before being elected, Mark was the General Secretary of the Australian Labor Party (NSW Branch) from June 2004 to December 2007. He served as Assistant General Secretary from 1999 and was the ALP State Organiser between 1996 and 1999.

Mark was part of Kevin Rudd’s key Campaign Team for the successful 2007 Federal Election and served as Campaign Director for the 2007 NSW State Election campaign. He was the Deputy Campaign Director for the successful 2003 State Election. Mark is a member of the Labor Party’s central decision making body, the National Executive and National Executive Committee.

Mark is also a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services and the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.
He is also the Co-Convenor of Parliamentarians Against Child Abuse & Neglect (PACAN).

Prior to working for the ALP, Mark worked as a Metal Trades Assistant, Lifeguard, Trade Union Official and Restaurant Cook. In 1995, Mark was elected as President of NSW Young Labor after joining the Party in 1992.

Mark has a Master of Arts in Political Science and Economic History from the University of NSW. He is 37 years old, married with two daughters and lives in Coogee, Sydney.

In February 2009, Mark was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary for Government Service Delivery within the Prime Minister's portfolio. In June 2009, Mark entered the federal ministry as Minister for Employment Participation and the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Government Service Delivery.
