Biography

Jim has a passion for Tropical North Queensland and is fighting for new infrastructure and to protect our way of life. He is working hard to ensure our region shares in the nation’s prosperity.

He lives in Cairns with his wife Tiffany who recently gave birth to their first baby Zoe, so he understands many of the challenges facing local families.

Jim is a practical man from a farming background who recognises the value of a good education. He has degrees in Agriculture and Economics. He has worked in business and government and recently managed a large project for the Department of Primary Industries assisting farmers recover after Cyclone Larry. Jim received a special commendation from the Prime Minister and Queensland Premier for this work.

He is an active member of the local community through Cairns Urban Landcare, SPEED (Southern Parents Empowering Early Development), Lifeline, Cairns and District Chinese Association and as a guest presenter on Cairns Community Radio.

He is also an avid sports fan, and a keen Brisbane Lions and Cowboys supporter.

Name Derivation: Named after Friedrich Leichhardt 1813-48, explorer and scientist.

Area and Location Description: Leichhardt covers an area of approximately 150 676 sq km from the Torres Strait Islands in the north to Edmonton in the south. The main towns include Bamaga, Cairns, Cooktown, Kuranda, Mossman, Port Douglas, Thursday Island and Weipa.

Products/Industries of the Area: Sugar, tropical fruit, aquaculture, cattle, fishing, bauxite mining, shipbuilding and tourism.
