Biography

Anne McEwen was born in Adelaide and attended St Joseph's Primary School, Hectorville, and St Aloysius College. After leaving school she worked in both the private and public sector in clerical and administrative positions. She undertook tertiary study as a mature age entry student and graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in politics and English literature.

In the late 1980s, Anne became a workplace delegate for her union, the Federated Clerks' Union. After a brief period working for the National Tertiary Education Union, Anne joined the Federated Clerks' Union (later to become the Australian Services Union) as an Industrial Officer/Organiser in 1993.

In 2002 Anne was elected Secretary of the SA & NT Branch of the Australian Services Union.

She was President of the South Australian Branch of the ALP in 2005.

Anne was elected a Senator for South Australia at the Federal Election in October 2004 and her term in the Senate started on 1 July 2005. She is currently a member of the following Parliamentary Committees:

  • Senate - Environment, Communications and the Arts
  • Senate - Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade
  • Senate - Scrutiny of Bills
  • Joint - Migration

She is also a member of the Parliamentary Group for Population Development, the Minister’s HIV Liaison Committee and a number of Parliamentary Friendship Groups.
