Before his election he worked as a journalist and editor, as an advisor to federal Labor ministers Barry Cohen and Alan Griffiths, and as an industrial officer with the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association. He also managed his late mother’s art gallery, and was for nearly two years in the Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU 3 TRG GP).

Since his election Michael has concentrated on issues of importance to his electorate, particularly child care, immigration and, more recently, climate change.
