Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth
From 1977, he was lead singer/co-lyricist of the Aussie rock band Midnight Oil who became renowned for their fierce independent stance and active support of a range of progressive issues like the plight of homeless youth, Indigenous land rights and protection of the environment. Midnight Oil became one of the most successful bands in Australian history, releasing thirteen albums and being awarded an ARIA lifetime achievement award in 2006.
As well as being a longtime successful musician, Peter has been a passionate activist, including serving two terms as President of the Australian Conversation Foundation.
Peter was inspired to join Labor to make a real difference, recognising Labor’s long time commitment to fairness and its willingness to put ideals as well as ideas into the political mix.

Peter was elected to parliament in 2004, he's been a member of Cabinet since 2007 and he is currently the Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth.
Peter lives in the Sydney suburb of Randwick and is married with three adult daughters. He enjoys reading Australian literature, listening to Aussie music, and camping in the Outback.
