George Wright, National Secretary of the Australian Labor Party, has released the following statement on the National Presidency Election.
The count of the ballot for the National President of the Australian Labor Party has now been completed and I’m pleased to formally announce that Mark Butler has been elected as National President of the Australian Labor Party.
Mark already has extensive experience in representing his local community as the Member for Port Adelaide, as a Minister in the last Labor Government and a Labor Party member for over 25 years. I know he will bring this outstanding experience, energy and intellect to his new role as National President.
Congratulations also to Tim Hammond on his election as National Senior Vice President and Jane Garrett on her election as National Junior Vice President.
With 19,494 votes cast in the ballot, it was great to see thousands of rank and file members participate in this election — 7,900 more votes cast than the 2011 election.
I know Mark, Tim and Jane will all do a great job for the members of the Australian Labor Party.
Best wishes to Louise Pratt and Henry Pinskier, who should be recognised for their commitment to the party standing in this election.
Thanks also to the outgoing National President Jenny McAllister, as well as outgoing National Vice President Tony Sheldon, for their outstanding service to the party. Jenny and Tony will continue to represent the voices of everyday Australians in their current roles.
