Dr Brian Owler AM, Labor’s candidate for Bennelong, is an Adult & Paediatric Neurosurgeon, former president of the Australian Medical Association (2014-16) and also a past President of AMA NSW, who has dedicated his career to caring for people and serving the community.
Nicknamed Mr Medicare, Dr Owler led the AMA’s campaign against the Abbott Government’s Medicare Co-payment. He has seen first-hand the pressure that’s been placed on hospitals and staff because of the Liberals’ funding cuts, and how undermining Medicare is bad for patients and for GPs.
Dr Owler also led numerous campaigns to reduce the incidence of preventable deaths and injuries in children, primarily in the areas of pool safety and falls from residential buildings in NSW and alcohol related violence. He was the face of the NSW ‘Don’t Rush’ anti-speeding campaign, encouraging Australian to adhere to speed Limits.
Dr Owler was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2018. Dr Owler is a Director of Autism Awareness Australia, Patron of the Hydrocephalus Association of NSW and a Vice-Patron of Road Safety Education. He is a Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Sydney. Dr Owler has a PhD from the University of Sydney and spent 18 months performing research at the Academic Neurosurgery Unit at the University of Cambridge.
