Currently ADF members are issued with boots at Defence’s expense. If the member wishes to have a different boot they must purchase it, at their own expense, from an established list. Under a Shorten Labor Government, ADF members will be able to select a boot from a panel of pre-approved providers which Defence will then supply and pay for.
Labor’s plan to expand access to approved boots will help better support our serving personnel.
A Shorten Labor Government will ensure the rollout of this program also creates local jobs. There are a number of Australian companies that will be able to meet the detailed specifications of the ADF and provide the boots.
The success of the ADF depends, in part, on the quality and appropriateness of the clothing and equipment our ADF personnel wear. We know that one size does not fit all, with some members requiring alternative options.
We would review this program after 24 months to ensure the effectiveness of the program and the satisfaction with requirements of both the ADF and our military personnel.
The policy has a budget cost of $800,000 over the forward estimates.
We will pay for this program by making multinationals pay their fair share and closing tax loopholes used by the top end of town.
