Steve was born in 1959 and has always lived in the federal electorate of Hindmarsh. He and his wife, Wendy, have two sons, George and Alex, who continue to enjoy a close relationship with their nearby grandparents.

Steve coached junior soccer in the area for many years; was a board member of the Glendi Festival for over 10 years; served as President of his local Lions club and was presented with the Monarch award in 1999 for his long-term contribution.

Steve began his career as a taxi driver who became involved in politics when lobbying for the rights of workers in the industry. Since then, he has worked across the public and private sector.

Steve won the seat of Hindmarsh in 2004 and was re-elected in 2010 for a third term.

Since being elected, Steve has helped to secure some major projects for Hindmarsh, including funding for a new King Street Bridge, an Aircraft Noise Ombudsman, the Glenelg to Adelaide Pipeline, funding for lights at Richmond and Glenelg Ovals, CCTV for Glenelg, and $1.5 million for Surf Life Saving SA's new headquarters, Surf Central.

Steve is the Chair the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing also sits on the Joint Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade, and the Standing Committee on Public Works.

Steve is a member of the House of Representatives Speaker's Panel.
