Member for Chisholm

Carina Garland was elected as the Federal Member for Chisholm in 2022. She is proud to represent her vibrant community and be a champion for Chisholm.

She grew up in the south-eastern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne that she now represents in Parliament, and she still lives locally. Carina went to school in Glen Iris before completing her undergraduate degree at Monash University in Clayton. She worked hard and was fortunate to receive a scholarship to undertake a PhD, and upon completion, she worked as an academic.

Carina’s grandparents came to Australia from a war-ravaged Italy, to build a secure life for themselves and their family. She wants to ensure that the opportunity to have a rewarding life is available for all.

Growing up, Carina’s dad was a GP and her mum was a nurse, and they ran their own medical practice. They instilled in her the hard work involved in making a business work and the vital importance of affordable, accessible and empathetic healthcare for everyone in our community.

Carina will always fight for her community and has a strong record of delivering on commitments. Since she was elected, she has successfully delivered local initiatives including a headspace centre in Box Hill, a fully bulk-billed Medicare Urgent Care Clinic in Mount Waverley, upgrades to roads, sporting pavilions and community infrastructure.

A strong advocate for meaningful action on climate change, Carina believes our future is in renewable energy, and that we need to protect our environment for future generations. She is proud to be part of a government that is delivering on legislated climate targets to reach Net Zero by 2050.

Carina is working hard to build a strong economy, with secure local jobs that you can raise families on. She is passionate about bringing manufacturing back to Australia and is fighting for opportunities for local manufacturers. She wants to see a Future Made in Australia, where our nation capitalises on our natural resources to become a renewable energy superpower.

Carina is ambitious for her community and for our country. She is fighting for better healthcare, education, jobs, climate action, more affordable housing, and a strong economy.
